Why the Name Nalanda Was Chosen

The ancient university of Nalanda, which flourished between the 5th and 12th centuries in Bihar, India, was one of the earliest and most significant centres of organised learning in human history. It attracted scholars from across Asia who came to study a wide range of subjects, including philosophy, logic, grammar, medicine, and astronomy. The institution was known for its rigorous academic standards, its disciplined residential structure, and its emphasis on deep intellectual engagement rather than superficial learning.

The name "Nalanda" was chosen for this institution as a tribute to that tradition of serious, structured, and purpose-driven education. The founders of Nalanda College of Medicine, Timor-Leste were inspired by the idea that a medical college should reflect those same values: a commitment to discipline, depth, and the long-term development of each student. The name is not a claim of lineage or affiliation with any modern institution bearing the same name.
